Ghostbusting Temperatures

A search in temperature databases show no warming during the 20th century - and temperatures since the 1950s have been falling over most parts of the U.S.A. So, where's the warming? At least not in the United States.

In a previous article – Ghost Temperatures - we expressed our serious doubts about the way average global temperatures are processed in order to arrive to the claimed “global warming”. Examining the U.S. Historical Climatology Network database, with records dating back to the early part of the 1800s, we have found no reason to claim there has been a warming in the United States.

Scientists at the Center for the Study of Carbon Dioxide and Global Change, insist that there has not been any substantial warming during the 20
th century, and they claim that "The Global Surface Air Temperature Record Must Be Wrong". Dr. Sherwood. B. Idso, and his sons Drs. Craig and Keith Idso, have reviewed a large body of evidence that suggests that the highly-hyped "unprecedented global warming" of the past two decades never actually occurred.

According to what they say in their excellent website, “This evidence includes:

  1. The satellite microwave-sounding-unit temperature record, which in the absence of the massive 1998 El Niño heat pulse shows no warming whatsoever from 1979 to the present,

  2. The weather-balloon temperature record, which for the same circumstances also shows no warming,

  3. The surface- and satellite-derived temperature records of earth's polar regions, which also show no warming, and

  4. the high-quality U.S. Historical Climatology Network data base, which, not surprisingly, also shows no statistically significant warming over this period.”
They now augment this substantial body of empirical evidence for no global warming over the last two decades with observations gleaned from tree-ring reconstructions of surface air temperature. We encourage you to visit their website and learn why they are so sure about what they claim.

But our main goal is providing here with a graphical view of the temperatures in the United States of America, using data from the U.S. Historical Climatology Network data base, plotting the data since the year 1900 (other records start later, as 1920, or 1920, but these are the exception), and grouping them in different pages – one for each of the contiguous states – where the different trends have been calculated.

The source of data is here: http://www.co2science.org/ushcn/ushcn.htm in case someone wants to plot his own trends starting and ending in different dates.

After a long and hard work we finished plotting the trends and making the graphs. We hope they will prove useful for having a better and clearer idea of what temperature trends really are. Comparing them whith those from the IPCC. and its cohort of alarmists should alleviate your fears of a "global" warming of catastrophic consequences.

UPDATE: AUGUST 28th, 2004. We have received the following email from Dr. Sherwood Idso, with commentaries and advices: Date: Sat, 28 Aug 2004 07:29:43 -0700
From: "Staff" staff@co2science.org
To: "Eduardo" shuara@fullzero.com.ar
Cc: cdi@co2science.org
Subject: From Argentina - graphs of your US Temp database

Dear Eduardo:

We are pleased to hear your website is doing so well; and are happy with your use of our temperature data base.

Your graphs and the story you want to tell about them would probably be even more effective, however, if you also showed the linear regression that results when the natural warming of the first part of the 20th century is omitted.

That is to say, perhaps you should also show the linear regression result for 1930 or 40 or 50 to the present, so people can easily see that there has indeed been no warming almost everywhere in the United States over the time period of greatest increase in the air's CO2 concentration.

Sherwood Idso

So, we are working on this advice and will be showing in a near future links to the most notorious examples of these "no-warming" trends (or cooling in many, many cases) since half of the 20th Century to present days - or perhaps during the last 30 years - 1970-2000, a long enough period to be considered a representative and valid trend for evaluation.

It is a period when there was the highest CO2 increase in the atmosphere, while there was not a corresponding increase in temperature.

NEW UPDATE: AUGUST 28th, 2004

We have received the following email from Australia: Warwick Hughes, a freelance researcher in climatology, with an extremely interesting and full of information website on climatic subjects, wrote us the following email: De: wshughes@iinet.net.au
Para: shuara@fullzero.com.ar
Asunto: Me gustó Espantando Temperaturas Fantasmas
Fecha: Sábado, 28 de Agosto de 2004 04:26 p.m.

Dear Eduardo,

Many thanks for letting me know about your huge Ghostbusting project. I have just added a link to you on my main page under outside links; http://www.warwickhughes.com/ top of list for "Greenhouse / Climate change issues".

You can see on my http://www.warwickhughes.com/climate/ site links in green (on the left if you scroll down) where I was working my way through the 5 degree grid cells across the southern USA. I got sidetracked from that into water and air quality issues. As you know, the Green "Hydra" is everywhere.

Like you no doubt I am watching for news of El Niño with interest, I saw a week or so ago where a USA group flew a kite saying EN was developing, the Australian BoM are still having a bet each way after a false alarm earlier in year.

My page http://www.warwickhughes.com/climate/cool8.htm is starting to get attention. I would have thought a group of school kids could do as well as the BoM.

Best of luck with your site, I will read more as I get time.

Warwick Hughes.

Keep tuned to this pages and will see those graphs and cooling trends that displeases so much the "scientific establishment".
